My Seamless Baby Vest

This is one of my favorite projects for a new baby. The seamless construction is both comfortable for the little one and a joy to knit. I love personalizing it by adding the baby’s first initial—it makes for a truly special, handmade gift.

The Knitting Process

I knit this vest from the bottom up, working in one piece. I cast on 140 stitches and knit for 20 cm. For the main body, I used a beautiful stitch that looks like a full rib, giving it a great texture.

When I reached the armholes, I divided the stitches: 35 for the right front, 70 for the back, and 35 for the left front. I bound off 10 stitches for each underarm and continued knitting the front and back panels separately. To create the V-neck, I decreased one stitch at the front edge of each front panel every few rows until I reached the desired neckline depth. I continued to knit until each panel was about 18 cm tall from the armhole. Finally, I bound off all the stitches for the shoulders and finished the back neckline.

The Finishing Touches

After completing all the knitting, I used a dark blue yarn to crochet a simple border around the collar and armholes for a tidy finish. The most special part, of course, was the letter. I crocheted the baby’s first initial using a single crochet stitch and sewed it securely to the front of the vest.
