Create Your Own Shabby Chic Crochet Vest
Shabby Chic clothes have become incredibly popular, and for good reason! With their asymmetrical style, they give you a modern and elegant look while creating a beautiful silhouette. This vest is a perfect example of that style.
You’ll create the vest by crocheting individual square motifs, which gives you the freedom to arrange them like an artist to create your own unique piece. No arms are crocheted on this vest, and the front can be worn open or closed with a brooch.
Materials & Sizing
This pattern is designed for a women’s size 42-44, but you can easily adjust the size to fit you perfectly. Our Stitch Calculation Method will be very useful for this.
You’ll need:
- 700 grams of cotton yarn
- A crochet hook size 6
The Square Motif
Each square piece measures approximately 22 cm x 22 cm. You will need a total of 18 square pieces for the vest: six for the right front, six for the back, and six for the left front. The pieces are made using treble crochets and chain stitches.
Here is the step-by-step guide for one square piece:
- Row 1: Create a magic ring. Crochet 18 treble crochets into the ring.
- Row 2: Work two crochets over every stitch from the previous row. You will have a total of 36 stitches.
- Row 3: Now we will create clustered stitches. Make one crochet in the first stitch from the row below. Then make two crochets in the next stitch, and one crochet in the third stitch. Crochet a clustered double treble over those three stitches. Then chain five stitches and repeat the clustered double treble. At the end of the row, you should have 12 treble crochet groups.
- Row 4: Work a crochet inside the chain over the four groups. At the end of the row, you will have a total of 60 crochets.
- Row 5: Repeat the pattern from the third row. At the end of the row, you will have 20 groups.
- Row 6: It’s time to turn your round piece into a square! For the corners, make three crochets, then five chains, and then three more crochets into the quadruple group below. Chain three stitches and make three crochets inside the three chains on the bottom row. After filling five spaces with treble crochets, you will complete a corner. After completing all four corners, you can continue with the row above. The following rows should be a repetition of this one. In our square piece, the square row has been repeated three times. You can do it in any size you wish.
Assembly
- Armholes: Leave a space of 26 cm for the armholes.
- Connecting Pieces: When connecting the square pieces below the arm, crochet one extra row to provide a solid connection point.
- Shoulders: The shoulder parts should be sewn together for a length of 10 cm.
- Finishing: After all the pieces have been connected, make single crochets on all sides to create a clean, finished edge.
