BLUE-WHITE BABY VEST

Handmade baby clothes are a timeless way to show your love. This simple baby vest pattern is perfect for beginners and knits up quickly using just baby yarn. The best part? Even the buttons are made of yarn, making it extra soft and safe for your little one’s delicate skin.

Let’s get started!

The Pattern

Materials

  • Baby yarn (enough for a vest)
  • Knitting needles, size 3

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Cast on 76 stitches.
  2. Knit 4 rows in garter stitch (knit every row).
  3. On the next row, create buttonholes for the cord. The front band is 5 stitches and will be worked in garter stitch for the entire piece.
  4. Knit the yoke section for 35 rows in plain knitting (knit on the right side, purl on the wrong side).
  5. Divide the stitches for the yoke as follows:
    • 5 stitches for the front band (garter stitch)
    • 10 stitches for the right front
    • 1 stitch for the increase point
    • 10 stitches for the right sleeve
    • 1 stitch for the increase point
    • 20 stitches for the back
    • 1 stitch for the increase point
    • 10 stitches for the left sleeve
    • 1 stitch for the increase point
    • 10 stitches for the left front
    • 5 stitches for the front band (garter stitch)
  6. Increase one stitch on each side of the four increase points on every knit row (right side).
  7. After completing the yoke, knit 3 rows of garter stitch and then bind off the stitches for the armholes.
  8. For the body, repeat the following two patterns 3 times:
    • 10 rows of moss stitch
    • 10 rows of plain knitting
  9. After completing the body, knit 3 rows of garter stitch and then bind off all stitches.

Finishing Touches

  • Using a crochet hook, create laces for the edges of the arms and the collar to give it a polished look.
  • Create a simple cord with white yarn and a blue yarn stitch to give it a nice accent.
  • Add any other embellishments you like to make it your own!
